25th Annual NCM Caravan and Beyond Page 2

Tuesday August 25th -Saturday September 7th

Tuesday September 3rd. Started the day at Big Sable Point Lighthouse. Because of the rain we all got a ride out to the lighthouse instead of the guys hiking out there. The lighthouse has 6 volunteers who work there 24/7 for 2 weeks at a time. Then another group of volunteers come in. Their schedule is May 1 to November 20. They split our group into 2 with half watching an educational video on the lighthouse and the other half touring the living quarters of the volunteers. We had to wait awhile because of the lightening in the area before we could climb up to the observation deck. What a sight from 92 feet above.

We left the lighthouse and had lunch in town at a restaurant one of the guides recommended. After we all ate more than we should have we walked down the street to a place Nadine Tichy recommended, House of Flavors, an ice cream shop with more flavors than you’ve ever seen.

We left town heading for St. Ignace traveling on the Ironton Ferry, a cable drawn ferry moving 4 cars at a time, which we used to cross the river. Drove through the tunnel of trees arriving at our destination.

Wednesday September 4th.  Took the ferry ride to Mackinac Island. Great place took the tour of the island seeing the sights. On Mackinac Island no motorized vehicles are allowed on the road, everything is either horse drawn or bicycle. We had a buffet lunch at the Grand Hotel, which was spectacular. After lunch just walked around town, found a place for an adult beverage then got back on the ferry.

Thursday September 5th. Started the day driving to Soo Locks. Very interesting the way they work. Watching a ship being transferred then went inside and saw a few videos which made it much clearer as to what was going on. By the way we were short bridge ride away from Canada.

We then headed for Dearborn, MI. long drive. When we finally got to our hotel, we found out that all the rooms booked had a single queen size bed, this worked for most but not for Bill and me. Because of the big car show the next day at the museum, most rooms were booked but eventually they found Bill and I an acceptable room.

Friday September 6th. Went to the Henry Ford Museum. We bought our 2 day passes as suggested by Bill and began our tour. This museum was unbelievable, they had so much stuff I never expected to see. They had the actual Lincoln JFK was shot in, they had trains, and airplanes plus they had cars. As many know they only built 48 Tuckers and we had seen 2 on this trip. Ron was so informative with his knowledge of trains and showed us so much. A few of us worked on a Model T putting on the driver’s side running board. We then went on the tour of the Rouge plant where they make high end F150 trucks, 4 door models and Raptors.

Saturday September 7th. Back to the Henry Ford Museum for the Village. We lucked out in that this was the weekend when the “Old Car Festival” took place for the 69th time. This is the oldest continuous running car show in America. There were over 800 Model T’s there plus truly unbelievable cars, nothing newer than 1938.

Bill and I started our trip home we stopping for the night in Nashville, after traveling through Ohio and Kentucky.

While the others were off to various places . . . Niagara Falls, Cincinnati Ohio, Chicago.
