DAY ONE - Saturday 6/18
Today was a long route with our goal to travel close to the NM border; our final destination
for today was
Amarillo, TX
Driver's Meeting and departure was at the
La Madeleine on I-35 &
Hwy 287

of course we had a Pit Stop or two along the way

We took in a few Route 66 stops along the way
to take in a little history while making the trip through TX more enjoyable
Shamrock, TX was our first stop
We visited the historic Rt 66 Conoco Station in Shamrock, TX; built in 1936

MB Video - Route 66 Conoco StationMB Video - Behind the Scenes

U-Drop Inn Cafe where “delicious food was courteously served” became the standard, and was a welcoming sight to highway travelers and the many buses that pulled in at the diner

the Vette didn't have the necessary plug in to recharge at this pump

you were on your own for lunch after visiting the Conoco Station - most walked across the street to Big Vern's Steakhouse

a newly completed mural was highlighted for us to look at inside the restaurant

some of us did visit other Route 66 sites in Shamrock including this Magnolia Gas Station being a little off the main path

We stopped and visited the Groom Cross

As you see here - the Cross is huge, 190' tall and it is free standing. The weight of the Cross is 2.5 million pounds
located just outside of Groom, TX - click here for the construction details

The 14 stations of Jesus' journey to the cross are represented in bronzeeach station had a bronze plaque that identified and shared the story

The Last Supper (unfinished) is just prior to going up the steps to the crucifixion stage

the details on the bronze sculptures were amazing - again, each with the bronze plaque sharing the story
a nice visitors center, theater, rest rooms and gift shopThey even had benches to rest and take a load off your knees

Cruisin' on down the highway
this part of Texas has more wind turbines than you could possibly count
After a long and boring 376 miles of primarily Hwy 287 & I-40, we pulled into the Comfort Inn in Amarillo, TX.

Everyone enjoyed a little time to relax before we headed out again.

Our Evening Activities

Dinner tonight was on your own.

Some went to eat at the Texan and some opted for the 7 bar & grill down the street

Some of us went out to Cadillac Ranch then back to the hotel on your own

...and what do people do when you tell them not to do something?

some of the guilty parties for defacing the cars were caught in the act

we made sure that Cowtown was represented

...of course it probably will be painted over by tomorrow evening
