DAY 8 - Saturday 6/25 continued
On Down the Road

the sky was fairly clear other than off in the distancethen we would turn and it would cloud up

we followed the road, sometimes along the river towards Canyon City

Our Next Adventure

Just outside of Canyon City, CO, we took a detour to enjoy a drive on Skyline Drive. This road was built back in 1908; even today, it is a one-lane, one-way road on top of a ridge overlooking the city

Denver Post Article with lots of history

Skyline Drive Video (8-1/2 minutes)
;

 This is a 3-1/2+ mile road with a few small overlook areas - none large enough for our group

 Fred & Doug left the Gorge early so Fred could setup for the video (on top of the ridge) - then Doug drove down to join the caravan

Corvettes on Skyline Drive Video (1-1/2 minutes)
;

we came down off Skyline Drive into Canyon City, CO  we pulled over to let Glenda & Margaret get back in the correct Vettes

Our Last Adventure

 we loaded back up and headed on south until we arrived at Bishop's Castle

this is definitely an odd structure - with an equally odd story behind it

it does have a working draw-bridge

 it is hard to imagine the hours of shaping metal and welding it to create these walkways and railing

lots of stained glass in the castle looking up to the glass ceiling - look thru the glass (and rain) to the tower

 again, a very odd structure that took a lifetime to create

I doubt OSHA would approve of the stairs ...or for that matter, not much of the structure at all

on a non-stormy day, these walkways and the dome would have people on it - Doug has climbed these years agothe dragon head adorns the top of the main part of the castle

 we waited under the castle for the rain to let up then we went for it - we had to pull the Vettes out into the road so our wives could get in without falling down the muddy hill

Time to head on down the road

beautiful and large rainbow after the storm

on down the road we arrived in Raton, NM - where we checked into the Best Western hotel

Dinner Reservations for Tonight

Dinner tonight was SUPPOSED to be at Mulligans Restaurant & Bar - when we called to share the count of 25 not 27, they stated they didn't really want our large group - so it became an on-your-own dinner night.  They were not very professional about it either
